WOMENS HOSPITAL ADDS NEONATAL TRANSPORT ISOLETTE
NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 20, 2003 Womens Hospital at Centennial has become the first hospital in the state, and one of only a handful in the country, to begin using The Voyager Light, a neonatal transport isolette to transport critically ill infants from other hospitals to Womens Hospital for care.
The Voyager Light, which will be used for acute neonatal transports, serves as a self-contained intensive care unit on wheels. It is equipped with a state-of-the art neonatal ventilator, cardio respiratory monitor, thermo regulatory control specifically created for neonatal patient transport, and an anti-vibration mattress to decrease stress to the baby and provide increased stability.
Neonatal transports account for 15 percent of the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admissions each year. The Womens Hospital neonatal transport program has been rapidly expanding, with 85 transports to date this year - 25 percent more than this time in 2002.
Every year we see an increased number of transport cases, said Nicole Herndon administrative director for Womens Hospital. With the new isolette, we will be better able to serve the needs of the babies as they are transported to Womens, The Neonatal Transport team consists of 45 medical professionals who are specially trained in neonatal transport and neonatal care. Womens Neonatal transport service covers a radius of approximately 60 miles from Nashville.
Womens Hospital has a 40-bed Level III NICU for pre-mature, sick and ventilator dependant infants, and is the fastest growing NICU in Tennessee. Womens Hospital has a survival rate of 85 percent for premature babies born at 25-27 week gestation and a 95 percent survival rate for premature babies born at 28-30 week gestation.
